Only two episodes remain in NCIS Season 13.
This enough of a reason for any fan of television's highest-rated show to grow a tad sad and sentimental.
But there's even more of a reason at the moment: Michael Weatherly will leave the series following the May 17 finale, taking his beloved character of Tony along with him.
It remains unclear just how NCIS will write Tony off, but CBS has released a special preview that teases the character's final two installment.
In Weatherly’s penultimate appearance as Tony - titled “Dead Letter” and airing next Tuesday, May 10 at 8/7c – the squad will team up with the FBI and MI6 (including guest stars Sarah Clarke and Duane Henry) to continue its international manhunt for rogue spy Jacob Scott.
He left Agent Fornell fighting for his life in ICU on NCIS Season 13 Episode 22.
Then, on the NCIS Season 13 finale, airing May 17 and titled “Family First,” we'll see Tony for the final time.
And we'll also see Ziva!
Cote de Pablo, who left the drama herself a couple years ago, makes more than one appearance in the following trailer, albeit in flashback form.
But still. Yay.
“We established early on [this season] that there were choices that Tony was going to be making as he’s looking at his career," NCIS showrunner Gary Glasberg recently told TV Line, adding:
"He’s going to find himself at a bit of a crossroads, with some significant issues to deal with."
It seems very unlikely that Tony will be killed off.
"People should absolutely be planning on some really serious, heart-wrenching moments," Glasberg also said.
"I’m very proud of the emotional resonance of what this is."
Weatherly, meanwhile, will next be seen in the CBS pilot Bull, which is based on Phil McGraw’s early career as a trial consultant.
